NSW DRUG ALERT
High dose MDMA pills: blue supermans
NSW health has released a warning about high dose light blue MDMA pills that have been found at a music festival in December 2021. These pills contained an average dose of 164mg. In NSW most pills contain 70-100mg of MDMA. A high dose of MDMA is considered to be 130mg.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS
Taking MDMA increases the level of serotonin available in your brain, which is what gives the drug it’s ‘feel-good’ effects. However, having too much serotonin available in your brain can be very harmful, and sometimes leads to what is known as Serotonin Syndrome. Serotonin Syndrome can be fatal, and was a factor in some of the MDMA-related deaths at NSW music festivals.
SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSE
-Rapid or racing heart rate
-High fever or temperature
-Headache
-Heavy sweating or lack of sweating
-Confusion
-Agitation or aggression
-Unconsciousness
-Loss of muscle coordination or uncontrolled repetitive movements
-Seizures
-Muscle rigidity or stiffness
-Eye “wobbles” or “look ups” (pupils rapidly/repetitively look up)
-Shivering/goose bumps
-Twitching muscles/ankle - unable to walk or put weight on their legs
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
-Don’t use alone. Use a zoom buddy or have someone on the phone with you. Make sure your friends know what you thought you were taking, and that they are comfortable calling an ambulance.
-If you’re using a new batch, start out with a small dose and wait to see if it feels right.
-Be extra careful if you’re mixing different drugs
-Use reagent testing kits and fentanyl testing strips.
-Carry naloxone and use if there are signs of an opiate overdose
-Avoid using in hot and humid weather as MDMA cause the body to dangerously overheat.
-Avoid double dosing or taking multiple doses.
-Avoid using with other stimulant drugs or medications e.g. methamphetamine, cocaine, caffeine, or dexamphetamine
-Find out whether MDMA has any adverse effects with your regular medications
-Stay hydrated. We recommend 1 cup of water per hour when you’re relaxing or 2 cups of water per hour when you’re actively partying.
HOW TO GET HELP
If you or someone you’re with experiences these symptoms get medical help ASAP
-Call Triple Zero (000) and ask for an ambulance
-Let the medics know what you’ve taken. You won’t get in trouble.
